Playgrounds For Older Adults Boost Activity, Decrease Loneliness

Seniors need more care and attention which is why someone came up with the idea to build playgrounds for elderly.

Children have their playgrounds, and they enjoy spending their free time in the nearest playground. They learn a lot of new things, and do a lot of fun activities.

Seniors can enjoy the same benefits. Of course, they can’t jump around, but having a playground just for themselves is a really good idea.

Aging is an inevitable part of our lives. It affect our mobility, health and overall well-being. That’s why seniors have to be more active. They deal with different health problems, including depression, anxiety, and diabetes. Loneliness makes their symptoms even worse.

Senior playgrounds have low-impact equipment that helps them stay active and improve their balance. They become more flexible, and enjoy working out on exercise bikes, cross-trainers, flex runners, sit-up benches and other pieces.

Seniors in Asia and Europe already have their playground. In 1995, people in China built a park to ease things for elderly.

The US is still making slow progress. KaBOOM! Is a non-profit organization that builds playgrounds for children. Today, they work with the Humana Foundation and make old parks more beautiful and useful.

There are 53 multigenerational parks in the US. Sarah Pinksy, Director of Client Services at KaBOOM! Says their parks put seniors and kids at one spot. This project is an excellent idea for everyone.

Colim Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging says these environments help people socialize.

The City of La Marque, Galveston County, Texas, spent over $36,000 in 2014 to pack the Carbide Park with new equipment.

Seniors have fitness steps, fitness ramps, cobweb floors, zig-zag pipe, throttle bar, stretching boards, seated bar grabs, and several other equipment that helps them maintain mobility, flexibility, and boosting balance.
